Our approach
Behavioural ecology has been largely neglected by conservation biologists in the past, despite its important consequences for the demography and genetic composition of populations.
Besides that, according to IUCN Red List, 25% of every mammal species is endangered. Large mammals are of particular concern because of their low reproductive rates and their need for large spaces. Unfortunately, populations become more and more isolated due to habitat fragmentation, and isolation has deep consequences on genetic composition.
The behavioural approach of our project therefore brings a significant added value to large mammal conservation, through the better understanding of factors impacting demography and genetic composition.
